While blood platelets are a critical piece of effective healthcare, bacterially contaminated platelet units remain one of the most prevalent complications of modern transfusion medicine. In fact, the risk of receiving bacterially contaminated platelets, which may lead to fatal transfusion-associated sepsis, may be 250-fold higher than the risk of transfusion-related infections associated from HIV, hepatitis B and C, and human T cell leukemia (HTLV I/II) viruses combined.
